The theme of Béla Ferdics’ work was the self-perpetuation of the shadow. The location chosen for his first project was a field, an area cultivated by man. The aim of the project was to capture the contours of a shadow cast by human body at different times throughout the day. Subsequently the author dug reliefs of different depths into the surface rethinking the idea and later on burying it in the ground. Since the shadows overlapped, their excavation resulted in a staggered relief. In his second project, the author experimented with artificial light in the evening forest. In contrast to the the human body used in the first project, he brought in the shadow of a square as a geometric shape to a small meadow surrounded by trees. The square made of foil, was held horizontally by two people, who occasionally moved it. The movement, combined with the variation of the light on the surface, influenced the position of the shadows, their contours and the evolution of the composition. The environment itself, the two figures standing opposite each other, the source of light above their heads and the black square created a sense of another dimension, moment of sacredness, celebration of the square.
